Tuna, Bigeye (Maguro) – Atlantic, Unassociated Purse Seine
Bigeye Tuna are a large fish, growing to over 200 kg (440 lbs), and are found throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They grow reasonably fast, can release millions of eggs each year, and can live to 10 years. In the Atlantic Ocean, high fishing levels have depleted the Bigeye Tuna population.
Purse seines that target free schools of tuna and do not use fish aggregating devices (FADs) are called unassociated purse seines. The unassociated purse seine tuna fishery in the Atlantic catches depleted Yellowfin Tuna and occasionally endangered/threatened sea turtles. This fishing method does not contact bottom ocean habitats.
