Tilefish, Golden – U.S. Mid Atlantic
Golden Tilefish are found along the Atlantic coast of North America, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and down to the northern coast of South America. It is a long-lived and slow growing deep-water species, that builds and lives in burrows on the bottom of the ocean floor. Golden Tilefish are ecologically important because they modify and create habitat.
In the U.S., there are three management populations: Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico. In the Mid-Atlantic, Golden Tilefish are at a healthy abundance and they are being fished at a sustainable level.
Bottom longlines are used to catch Golden Tilefish in this region. While this fishing method often results in high bycatch, in the Golden Tilefish fishery, bycatch is low. Bottom longlines cause moderate damage to bottom ocean habitats.
