Shortfin Squid are found on the offshore continental shelf and slope waters of the northwestern Atlantic, from Florida to Labrador. They grow quickly and reproduce at a young age, which helps them withstand moderate fishing pressure. Their abundance level in the U.S. Atlantic is uncertain. Abundance varies from year to year due their short life span and sensitivity to environmental conditions.

Shortfin Squid are caught with bottom trawls over sandy/muddy habitats. The fishing method results in moderate damage to the seafloor habitats. However, the biggest concern in the fishery is the bycatch of highly vulnerable marine mammals and sea turtles.
