Sole, Yellowfin – Alaska
Yellowfin Sole is a commercially important Pacific groundfish. Yellowfin Sole grows at a slow rate and can live for 31 years.
The abundance of Yellowfin Sole off Alaska is above target levels and fishing levels on Yellowfin Sole are sustainable. Management of this fishery is highly effective.
Bottom trawling for Yellowfin Sole takes place over sand/mud habitats, which are not as damaged by trawling as other habitats. Also, there are numerous spatial restrictions in place that limit the use of bottom trawl gear and help mitigate overall habitat impacts. The fishery catches some non-target species, but none are of high conservation concern.
