Sole, Petrale – U.S. West Coast
Petrale Sole are a commercially important Pacific groundfish species. Petrale Sole grow at a moderate rate and can live for over 30 years.
Petrale Sole are no longer considered depleted, and are rebuilding toward the target abundance level. Management of this species is fairly responsible, highlighted by recent measures adopted to restore the health of the fishery and prevent bycatch.
Petrale Sole are caught by bottom trawling, which can be environmentally destructive; however, the sandy and muddy habitat where Petrale Sole are found is less susceptible to long-term damage than other seafloor habitats. Also, there are a number of spatial restrictions in place that limit the use of bottom trawl gear and help mitigate overall habitat impacts.
