Vermilion Snapper are found from North Carolina to Brazil and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. They reach sexual maturity at a young age and produce many offspring, spawning multiple times per year.

Vermilion Snapper abundance in the Gulf of Mexico is uncertain. Vermilion Snapper abundance in the South Atlantic is below the target level, but the population is not considered depleted.

The majority of fishermen use vertical hook-and-line gear to catch Vermilion Snapper, which has little impact on bottom habitat. However the fishery catches some depleted grouper species.
