Some problems exist with this species' status or catch methods, or information is insufficient for evaluating. Octopus, Common (Tako) – Spain These fish contain levels of mercury or PCBs that may pose a health risk to adults and children.

Common Octopus are wide-ranging and have short lifespans.

While management and monitoring of Octopus fisheries are weak in many countries, in Spain the fisheries are under better management and the population is stable.

In Spain, Octopus are caught using bottom trawls and pots. Bottom trawls can cause significant habitat damage and catch unwanted wildlife. The pot fishery, however, has low bycatch rates and is less destructive to bottom habitats.
