Mullet, Striped – Florida

Striped Mullet is a short-lived, schooling fish species found in coastal waters in tropical and temperate regions. It is an important food source for many other ocean animals. Striped Mullet are targeted for their valuable eggs (sold as roe in seafood markets).

In the U.S. most commercial fishing for Striped Mullet occurs off of Florida. The fishery is well-managed, and the Florida Striped Mullet population is at a healthy abundance level.

Fishermen use cast nets and beach seines to target schools of Striped Mullet. These fishing methods catch few non-target species and have minimal effects on ocean habitats.
