Jack Macrae was born in New York City and graduated from Harvard University in 1954. His publishing career ranges from a Deputy Director position with HarperCollins in the 1960’s to being Editor-in-Chief at Henry Holt and Company (1983-89). Today he manages the Henry Holt imprint, John Macrae Books, and is part-owner – with wife of 20+ years, Paula Cooper – of 192 Books on 10th Avenue in Manhattan. The pair lives in New York City and has four grown children.
Macrae has edited and published such award-winning authors as Jorge Luis Borges, David Levering, Ed Abbey, Calvin Tomkins, and Hilary Mantel. He is a member of PEN, the worldwide writers’ association (since 1967); the International Freedom to Publish Committee (1970-); and the Fund for Free Expression, Human Rights Watch (1971-). He is presently working with SUNY Stonybrook-Southampton in an attempt to restore an estuary and peninsula in Mastic, Long Island.
