Safina Center “Kalpana Chawla ‘Launchpad’ Fellow” Molly Adams hosts a Feminist Bird Club walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir in Queens, NY, with birder Rob Jett on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at 7:30am. Rob was one of 14 people from various parts of the city that came together in 2007 to brainstorm how to protect this unique natural and historic area from development. In February 2018, it was finally added to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, this year the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation granted the area protection under the Freshwater Wetlands Act. To date 164 species of birds have been observed at the reservoir’s 50 acres of emerging hardwood forest, wetlands and freshwater lake.
A native New Yorker, Rob has been leading birding & nature tours around NYC for over 25 years. He is a firm believer that education of our natural surrounding, even in an urban setting, is important for all New Yorkers to better understand and, ultimately, protect our world.
