David Rothenberg and Erica Cirino attend ‘Ocean. Now!’ event “UN Day of the Oceans: Our responsibility in the Anthropocene,” in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 4:30pm.

How consciously do we live in the Anthropocene with regards to microplastics, for example to the ones in cosmetics? Nonprofit organization “Ocean. Now!” would like to explore this question, and invites you to join them at an awareness-raising and dialogue-rich evening, where participants and organizers look into the relationship of mankind’s relationship to the ocean, with representatives from politics, art and science. Political decision-makers and scientists from the field of microplastic research as well as our collaborating artist Swaantje Güntzel are joining the event. Expect lectures, presentations, visual animations, a “science corner”, music and a mini-fishbowl discussion designed to stimulate dialogue between citizens and politicians. The aim of the evening is to raise awareness to initiate dialogue between the public, scientists and politicians. It is the preparatory event for the presentation of the open letter to the Minister of the Environment, Svenja Schulze. This letter, created by Ocean. Now! and partners, calls for the legal banning of microplastics in cosmetics and cleaning products. Find out more and sign here.

The goal is to create a unique atmosphere that is interactive, in which people exchange experiences, learn and relax. Ocean. Now! has selected ocean music from Safina Center Fellow David Rothenberg and others, talks / presentations, visual impressions, a short film and a science corner where you can test your knowledge of microplastics in cosmetics yourself. And the political discussion will also be exciting – be surprised. Moderator of the evening will be Dörthe Eickelberg.

Safina Center “Kalpana Chawla ‘Launchpad’ Fellow” Erica Cirino will also be present at the event to share her experiences as photojournalist and scientist investigating the issue of plastic pollution globally.

Location: Alte Münze, Molkenmarkt 2, 10179 Berlin, Germany
