The Safina Center uses funds from the Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund for the purposes of rewarding bright young people working to solve conservation issues. In 2017 the Safina Center developed the Safina Center “Kalpana Chawla Launchpad Fellowship” program to kickstart young venture-level talent, helping launch the early thrust of their careers and create an affiliation of like-minded kindred spirits.
The Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund is named in honor of Kalpana Chawla, the dynamic, nature-loving astronaut who perished aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle in 2003. She chose to bring Carl Safina’s Song for the Blue Ocean as one of the few personal belongings to accompany her in space. A year after her death, her family and friends established the Kalpana Chawla Scholarship at the Safina Center.
The Safina Center is honored to commemorate Kalpana’s adventurous, courageous spirit by supporting inspiring young conservationists.
Dive deep down
An aim awaits
Pearls peep – for your hands to reach
For years, decades and ages
A door lies locked
A pearl in the shell
A secret in the brain
