Safina Center Endowments

We invite you to donate to one of two endowments at the Safina Center–the the Eric Gilchrist Endowment Fund; and the Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund–in addition to direct donations. Your support is greatly appreciated.

The Eric Gilchrist Endowment Fund

Our late friend and board member Dr. Eric Gilchrist’s was a long-time support of The Safina Center has continued beyond his passing. His bequest to us is intended, as Eric put it, “to direct compassion and heart-filled work toward the living creatures of this planet.” We miss Eric and will always remember his friendship and enduring support.

If you are interested in contributing to Eric’s endowment fund, please contact us by Email or Phone: (631) 675-1984.

The Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund

The Safina Center uses money from the Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund to support bright young people working to solve conservation issues. In 2017 the Safina Center developed the Safina Center Launchpad (“junior”) Fellowship program to kickstart young venture-level talent, helping launch the early thrust of their careers and create an affiliation of like-minded kindred spirits.

The Kalpana Chawla Scholarship Fund is named in honor of Kalpana Chawla, the dynamic, nature-loving astronaut who perished aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle in 2003. She chose to bring Carl Safina’s Song for the Blue Ocean as one of the few personal belongings to accompany her in space. A year after her death, her family and friends established the Kalpana Chawla Scholarship at the Safina Center.

The Safina Center is honored to commemorate Kalpana’s adventurous, courageous spirit by supporting inspiring young conservationists.

Dive deep down
An aim awaits
Pearls peep – for your hands to reach
Just yours
For years, decades and ages
A door lies locked
A pearl in the shell
A secret in the brain
Open it
Break it
Reveal it
Fly High.
