The Safina Center (formerly Blue Ocean Institute) is looking for a seafood analyst to conduct research on fish/shellfish species and to write seafood recommendation reports. Our seafood recommendation reports are published on our website so consumers can make informed and educated decisions when purchasing seafood. Our seafood recommendations are also used by our partner Whole Foods Market, as well as other retailers, NGOs and chefs.

This is a 32 hour per week contract position that pays $20/hr. The analyst can work remotely (but must be a U.S. resident) or based at our office in Setauket, NY.

Primary duties:

  • Research and interpret fisheries information from scientific literature, technical reports, fishery management plans, etc.
  • Analyze information according to internally established criteria for evaluating fisheries.
  • Write reports based on research and
  • Rate species using quantitative scoring system and web-based assessment procedure.
  • Create educational PowerPoint presentations on final seafood recommendations and present them via webinar.


  • A master’s degree in the marine science or conservation fields, preferably with a focus in fisheries, or equivalent experience.
  • Understanding of fisheries issues and how fisheries are assessed and managed.
  • Experienced researcher, attention to detail.
  • Excellent writer, capable of synthesizing scientific information so that it can be understood by the general public.
